Chemical
Dependency Program
Adolescent CD Groups
Adolescents ages 13 - 18
are referred to these groups if it is determined that they either
abuse or are dependent on drugs or alcohol. These groups provide
information crucial for informed choice making about future use
or abstinence from use. Materials in films, discussion, didactic
presentations, and from speakers assist the patient in identifying
their relationship with drugs or alcohol, witnessing the effect
on their life and reducing their resistance to accepting responsibility
for change.
Adolescents that have expressed
recognition and ownership of their chemical dependency may be
referred to the Advanced group. Step work is begun during the
patient's participation in the Advanced group. Groups focus on
the patient's ability to recognize triggers, manage craving, develop
and utilize support systems that reinforce their sobriety and
prepare themselves for changes they will face upon their return
to the community.
This group includes children
ages 12 and under who have been identified as having abused substances.
The orientation for this group is primarily cognitive/behavioral
and focuses on providing information about addiction, disease
concept, effects of CD on the family, planning for abstinence
and refusal skills training. Materials are presented in an age-appropriate
manner which allows the children better comprehension.
Adolescents in the CD groups
may attend off campus meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics
Anonymous when determined appropriate by the patient's treatment
team. Adolescents must complete a petition process requesting
permission from the treatment team to attend the AA or NA meetings.
